My professional development investment this year was an online course on “systems Scribing” headed up by Kelvy Bird and a global team of practitioners.

The course was five live modules long and supported by pre-reading and an online community space on the Mighty Networks platform.

The course flow was:

Module 1: Containers
October 2nd – 8th
Live Session: October 2nd

Module 2: Systems Thinking
October 9th – 15th
Live Session: October 9th

Module 3: Systems Being
October 16th – 22nd
Live Session: October 16th

Module 4: Systems Living
October 23rd – 29th
Live Session: October 23rd

Module 5: Case Study
October 30th – 31st (and beyond)
Live Session: October 30th

The idea was to attend the live Zoom modules and then interact with the community on the platform. My schedule was really hectic in October and so I chose to take the “recorded” path, which was slightly lower in cost but provided the same access to resources but without so much group interaction.

Module 1  – Containers

The focus of this module was twofold: Introduce the team and do a basic introduction to the concept of “containers”i.e. the holding space for enabling conversations.

Prior to class several resources where shared, including excerpts from Kelvy’s book and also content from an upcoming book on systems thinking:

SSL Module1 readings

The class was around one hour and included several break out sessions. These were edited out of the recording. Below is my sketchnote from the class:

Each class also asks us to reflect and practice.

The task for Class 1 was to reflect, journal and visualise the following questions around containers:

  • Who holds me?
  • Who do I hold?

  • What in my life would I like held?
  • By whom?
  •
What would it take for this to happen?

This is my simple visualisation on this initial task.

I have also really enjoyed reading and seeing the work of my fellow students of the course. There is a great mixture of styles and methods of working.

I will post up my sketchnote and practice for Class 2 when done!

Thanks for reading!
