Cynefin (kun-ev-in) is the Welsh word for habitat, It is the name of the sense making framework developed by Dave Snowden. Here are some resources that I have gathered around the framework:

A great introductory video:

Dave Snowden himself introducing his model:

I like THIS simple introductory article. It explores what is different in each of the problem types.

THIS link leads to a .pdf file of the original HBR article on the concept as a tool for leaders to make decisions. This I consider an essential read on the topic.

THIS longer .pdf entitled “The new dynamics of strategy: Sense-making in a complex and complicated world” is a great longer article on the model and its use.

THIS article entitled “The Cynefin Framework and the Technical Leadership: How to Handle the Complexity” is also worth a read as a solid summary.

Finally, the mandatory wikipedia article with additional resources can be found HERE.

David and his team at Cognitive Edge, write extensively about the framework on their blog. You can find it HERE.

I find this a very helpful construct in coaching / training senior leaders to be effective in the D-VUCAD world we live in.
